A contractor will begin sidewalk shaving in various locations around Dublin in mid-October. Shaving will be performed at roughly 100 locations that have already been determined and approved. The full project will take a few weeks to complete, but each location is expected to take approximately 30-60 minutes. The City will provide direct notification to those residents whose sidewalks are being improved.
In the City of Dublin, safety is our number one priority. Dublin is one of the few communities that provide residents with the service of repairing safety issues with sidewalks at no direct charge to the property owners. This year, repairs will be offered in the form of sidewalk shaving. If a sidewalk cannot be shaved without compromising the structural integrity of the walk, the trip hazard will be added to the sidewalk replacement evaluation program to be funded in future years.
The evaluation process depends on many factors such as:
- A request for repairs by the resident
- The severity of the safety hazard based on defined criteria
- The location of the safety hazard relative to public facilities
- Other repair work needed in the area
- Whether the sidewalk panel is cracked or broken (they will not be shaved)

Frequently Asked Questions
How will I be affected during the sidewalk shaving project?
Due to the shaving of the sidewalks, access to your sidewalk, and sometimes your driveway, may be briefly obstructed during the project hours. Normal construction hours are 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. The trip hazard removal process uses a specialized blade with a vacuum attachment for dust control. The cutting process takes 30-60 minutes per location.
We do not plan to disturb your private property. However, if any unforeseen damage does occur to your lawn, it will be repaired. The City appreciates the property owner’s cooperation in watering newly seeded areas. Please notify your lawn services of any newly seeded areas on your property.
What happens during the shaving process?
A company called Precision Concrete Cutting will shave or “plane” edges of your concrete panels.
What if I have a sprinkler system or underground dog fence by my sidewalk?
The process should not disturb sprinkler systems or electric dog fences near the sidewalk.
What has the City done to keep debris and noise to a minimum?
Construction projects can create noise, dust or other disruptions. To minimize these problems, the City restricts hours of project work.
The contractor will also use a dust control vacuum attachment when running the equipment to minimize dust particles in the air and will clean up debris regularly. Despite the vacuum attachment on the saw, significant dust may be present during the shaving process. It is suggested you have your windows and garages closed during the shaving process.
What about other City Services?
There will be no changes in your emergency services. There will be no changes in your refuse pick-up. All lawn waste, garbage and recyclable collection will continue according to their normal pick-up schedules.
How long will the process take?
The cutting process takes 30-60 minutes per location.
