City of Dublin Awarded for Most Outstanding Highway Project
(DUBLIN, Ohio) – The City of Dublin has been recognized by the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) with the 2013 Most Outstanding Highway Project award (projects under $3 million in construction costs), for the Shier Rings Road/Cosgray Road roundabout.
This project upgraded a high speed intersection with double the crash severity index compared to the average intersection in the City of Dublin. The roundabout’s innovative design and sustainable features, such as its complex drainage system, have also opened the door for future development.
“In the City of Dublin, we use roundabouts as a safe and innovative solution for dangerous intersections,” said Paul Hammersmith, director of engineering, “This roundabout not only increases public safety, but also reflects the City of Dublin’s goal of sustainability.”
Sustainable features of the project include the use of LED lights and storm water best management practices, including vegetated biofilters and storm water quality measures, which will slow storm water runoff and remove pollutants. The continuous flow of roundabout traffic will also result in lowered vehicle idling and greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
Additional benefits to the community include easy access to and from Daree Fields Park as well as a bike path, giving residents the option to walk or ride to the park.
The Shier Rings Road/Cosgray Road project began in July, 2012 and was completed in November, 2012, making it the thirteenth roundabout in the City of Dublin. Since the project’s completion, four new roundabouts have been planned, including a partnership with the City of Columbus at Tuttle Crossing.
