(Dublin, Ohio) As we head toward Labor Day weekend, the Dublin Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. DPD is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to stop drunk drivers and help save lives. The campaign runs through September 4, 2017. During this time, DPD is showing zero tolerance for drunk driving by dedicating more resources toward targeting impaired drivers.
According to the latest numbers provided by NHTSA, there were 460 crash fatalities nationwide over the Labor Day holiday period in 2015.
- 40% of those fatal crashes involved drivers who had been drinking (.01+ BAC).
- 33% involved drivers who were legally drunk (.08+ BAC)
- 23% involved drivers who were driving with a BAC almost twice the illegal limit (.15+ BAC).
Nighttime is the most dangerous time to be out on the roads: During the 2015 Labor Day holiday period, 78 percent of drunk-driving crash fatalities occurred between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m.
“Drunk driving is not acceptable,” says Dublin Police Chief Heinz von Eckartsberg. “One of our top priorities, as a police department, is to improve overall traffic safety, and that includes getting drunk drivers off the road. Our officers will be watching the roads and highways. Designate a sober driver. Use a convenient ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. Take a cab. Just do not get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.”
Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend! Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
