According to legend, in1810 Irish surveyor
JohnShieldswasgiven thehonor of naminga
brandnewcommunityalong thebanksof the
SciotoRiver. “If I have thehonor conferredupon
me tonameyour village,with thebrightnessof
themorn, and thebeamingof the sunon the
hills anddales surrounding thisbeautiful valley,
itwouldgivemegreat pleasure tonameyour
new townaftermybirthplace, Dublin Ireland.”

From itshistoricbeginnings, theSciotoRiver
was thecenterpiece that attracted settlers to
Dublinand, alongwithapioneering spirit, re-
mains an intrinsicpart of thecommunity today.
Thepainting shows thebeginningsof thenew
settlement lookingacross the river from the
first housebuilt inDublinby JohnSells, one
of thearea’s founding fathers and thefigure
traveling thepathalongside the river.
