Dublinwashealthiest first. TheCitywas thefirst city in thenation to receiveaccreditation from
HealthLead™USHealthiestWorkplaceAccreditation for its effectiveemployeewellnessprograms
andpractices. It’s anapproach that haspaiddividends inworkers’healthand thehealthcarecosts.
For example, theCitypaid$628,090 less inhealthcareclaims thanhadbeenbudgeted for 2013,
thanks to theConsumerDrivenHealthPlanand theCity’swellnessplans. TheCity’sHealthPlan,
which requires employeeson the familyplan topaya$5,000deductiblebeforepayingclaims, is
alsocredited for a10percent decrease in theCity’s cost ofmedical claimsbetween2011
and2013.
TheCity’swellness approachhas alsoput less strainonCity staff– literally. Aspart of our
wellnessplan, City staffwhoperformphysical labor aspart of their job start their day stretching
at thebeginningof their shift; thisprocesswas creditedwitha40percent reduction in
sprain-strained injuries filedwithWorkersCompensation in2013, compared to2012.
It is important tonote, though, that theCity is a reflectionof our residentswhoplacewellness as
apriority. In2013, theCityof about 43,000peoplehadmore than500,000visits toour recreation
andfitness locations. Therewereanadditional 77,000-plus visits toDublin’spools.
Inaddition,more than1,500participants attendedoneof the14wellness educationand speaker
series seminars sponsoredby theHealthyDublinProgram. Even theLeagueof AmericanBicyclists
namedDublinaBicycleFriendlyCommunity in2013 forDublin’s commitment tobicycling.
