TheCityofDublinemergedas acommunity leader in the ght against distracteddriving. TheCity launched
a two-prongedapproach tochangedangerousdrivingbehaviors. Theapproach includesbothenforcement
andeducation. It is anongoinge ort that isnowpart of the fabricofDublin’s identity.
Enforcement:
InDublin, drivingdistracted is a fourth-degreemisdemeanor.
Adistracteddrivingviolation ispunishablebya neup to$250and twopointsonanoperator’s license.
InDublin, distracteddriving is aprimaryo ense,meaningDublinPolicecanpull amotorist over if theyobserve
distracteddrivingbehaviors, suchas texting.
Education:
Car crashes are thenumber one killer of teens.
Ninepeopleare killedand1,060are injuredeverydaydue todistracteddriving.
At anyminute in theday, approximately660,000drivers in theUSareusingcell phonesormanipulatingelectronic
deviceswhiledriving.
NewCommunity ImpactUnit
TheDivisionalsoaddeda specializedgroupof o cers to focusonpropertycrimes, tra ccrash reductionand
neighborhood tra ccomplaints. TheCommunity ImpactUnit (CIU) includes a sergeant, two investigators, four tra c
o cers andacanineo cer. The tra co cers investigate tra ccomplaints andmanage thedivision’s speed reduction
program,while the two investigators focusonproactive strategies tocombat propertycrime trends. CIU investigators
successfullycleared69percent of their cases in theunit’s rst year.
CitizenPoliceAcademy
Twenty-sixparticipants joined thegrowingnumber ofDublinCitizenPoliceAcademyGraduates. The3rdannual program
startedonAugust 28andendedonDecember 11withagraduationceremonyat theCity’s JusticeCenter.
Participants included residents fromallwalksof life. They receivedahands-on learningexperience involvingeverything
from thearrest process, searchand seizureandevena rearms live-shootingexperience. The13-weekprogramgives
participants insight into theprofessionof lawenforcement and theoperationsof theDublinDivisionof Police, and it helps
tocreateapartnershipbetweenpoliceand theDublincommunity.
