City of Dublin Announces Strategic Land Acquisition for Economic Growth and Recreation

The City of Dublin is excited to announce the negotiation of a strategic land acquisition of approximately 243 acres in the West Innovation District.

This acquisition, valued at $44.6 million, includes parcels in both Franklin and Madison Counties and encompasses SportsOhio (97.5 acres), Shepherd Excavating (7.9 acres) and Carter Farms (137.1 acres).

This land can be leveraged for a number of strategic opportunities related to economic development, transportation enhancements and recreational expansions. This acquisition advances City Council’s strategic framework and visionary goals as well as several strategic plans, including the Envision Dublin Community Plan update and Economic Development Strategic Plan.

It will also enable the completion of University Boulevard, enhancing north-south connectivity, extending public utilities and supporting economic development in the West Innovation District.

“This exciting investment is a significant step forward in our strategic plans to build out Dublin’s infrastructure in our West Innovation District, promote economic opportunities and expand recreational amenities,” says City Manager Megan O’Callaghan.

The development also aligns with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and supports Dublin’s goal to be a destination city of choice.

“This acquisition presents the opportunity to leverage both Darree Fields and SportsOhio to further establish Dublin as a premier sports destination that will host various recreational sports, events and tournaments to serve the needs of our community and attract investors and visitors from all over the country,” O’Callaghan says.

A comprehensive financial plan ensures the acquisition and subsequent development are fiscally responsible. The City is partnering with experts and considering management agreements to ensure optimal performance and sustainable operation of the sports complex.

Additionally, when combined with land the City previously acquired across the railroad tracks to the east, the Carter Farms parcels provide the City with a prime location for the development of a future passenger rail station, which is being contemplated as part of the West Dublin Passenger Rail Station Study. This study will ensure that a rail station in Dublin is included in regional planning for the upcoming Amtrak expansion. This expansion features four key routes in Ohio, including the Midwest Connect corridor from Chicago to Pittsburgh, passing through Central Ohio.
