Community Noise

Overview

We heard you, Dublin! (Pun intended)

As our community continues to grow, everyday sounds, from traffic to vehicle noise, have become a more common concern. To help protect neighborhood peace while keeping expectations clear and fair, Dublin City Council updated the City’s noise ordinance. The result is a modernized approach that sets clear standards, improves consistency and helps everyone better understand what’s allowed and what isn’t.

Background

The updated noise ordinance reflects resident feedback, benchmarking with peer cities and a comprehensive review of how noise impacts daily life in Dublin.

Proposed amendments were introduced to Dublin City Council on Nov. 17, 2025, updating three existing sections of the City Code and adding a new provision that prohibits engine braking within city limits. City Council approved the changes at its Feb. 9, 2026, meeting. (See the FAQs section for specific code references)

What’s Changing as a Result?

Clear, measurable limits have now been set for the most frequent noise complaints:

  • Vehicle engine/exhaust noise: For posted speed limits of 35 mph and lower, the threshold is 86 decibels. For higher-speed roads, the threshold is 90 decibels.
*Exemptions: emergency vehicles, festivals/parades, fireworks shows, concerts and other permitted temporary events
  • Engine braking: Prohibited within city limits.
  • Vehicle sound systems: Speakers and stereos must stay below 80 decibels.
  • Public nuisance noise: Sound levels may not exceed 80 decibels for more than 15 minutes, measured at 50 feet.
  • Ongoing/overt disturbances: Repetitive or persistent noise may still be considered a violation, even at lower volumes.

What Residents Can Expect

  • Faster, clearer responses when noise concerns arise
  • Better alignment with community expectations
  • Improved communication about what is and isn’t allowed

How Will Enforcement Work?

The updated ordinance gives Dublin Police clearer guidelines and tools to address noise concerns.  Enforcement focuses on a balanced approach:

  • Education First— officers start with a conversation and request voluntary compliance
  • Warnings for Repeat Issues— officers may issue a warning or document the incident if the problem continues
  • Citations for Ongoing or Overt Violations— used when disturbances are significant or persistent

FAQs

What parts of the City Code were updated?
The updates revise three existing sections of the Dublin Code and add one new section:

  • §72.021 – Loud Noise from a Motor Vehicle
  • §132.03 – Disorderly Conduct
  • §153.076 – Public Nuisance
  • §72.022 – No Engine Brakes Permitted (new)

Is this intended to increase ticketing?
No. The goal is not punishment but preserving peace and comfort in our neighborhoods. Dublin Police will prioritize education and voluntary compliance before issuing citations.

What information is helpful when reporting a recurring noise issue?
Providing details such as the location, time of day, how often the noise occurs and the type of noise helps the City respond more effectively.

What if I’m unsure whether a noise issue is a violation?
If you have a question or are unsure whether a situation qualifies as a violation, please call the Dublin Police Non‑Emergency Line at 614.889.1112 so the City can provide guidance.

Public Records Request Overview

Why JustFOIA?

JustFOIA is a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) online application that helps streamline the open records request process for the community and improve efficiencies in getting requested information quickly and accurately.

The application lets community members submit requests for all city records, including police reports. Commonly requested information includes accident reports, copies of resolutions and body-camera video.
