Information and communication technology giant Fujitsu has successfully beta tested its smart city technologies in Dublin’s Darby Street parking lot in Historic Dublin. Cameras, fiber optic cables, power facilities and wireless radio equipment was installed in the parking lot in late 2019. Utilizing data analytics algorithms and a local high-speed wireless broadband network, the technologies measure and analyze parking patterns in the lot.
The technology is available to identify how many vehicles are in the lot and whether they are parked or moving. The cameras are not designed to discover any personal identifying information, such as facial recognition or license plate recognition. People and vehicles are not identified. Video from the system is not be stored long term.
The trial is part of the City’s Connected Dublin initiatives, and it demonstrates the living lab environment that is available in The Beta District, a region spanning three municipalities where innovators from around the world deploy, test, and evolve pioneering technology in real-world settings. The technologies in the Darby Street lot may one day offer Smart Parking options for drivers. For now, the technology is providing valuable insights to City staff about traffic and parking patterns in the thriving Historic District.
