(Dublin, OH) On October 11, 2021, Dublin City Council voted to accept a $20,000 grant from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Ohio to build a mobility hub near the Senior Lounge at the Dublin Community Recreation Center (DCRC).
Mobility hubs designate a space to co-locate multiple modes of transportation, such as bike share and a Dublin Connector shuttle stop. They serve as a transfer point between the mobility options and as a landmark for orientation within the community.
“This mobility hub will enhance mobility options for our senior community in a popular and well-known location at the DCRC,” says City Planner J.M. Rayburn. “It will improve rider accommodations, reduce rider stress and improve access to the popular Dublin Connector shuttle service.”
Dublin’s Transportation & Mobility team has identified 15 to 20 proposed locations for mobility hubs in the city. Four locations are being prioritized in ideal areas to introduce the concept to Dublin. The proposed locations for the first phase of implementation include the following:
- DCRC
- Parking garage adjacent to the Columbus Metropolitan Library – Dublin Branch
- North Market Bridge Park
- Frantz Road & Metro Place North
These locations were selected based on ridership data from the Dublin Connector shuttle, proximity to community destinations, type of activities associated with each nearby destination, grant opportunities and feedback from Dublin’s Public Services Committee.
The DCRC was selected as the site of Dublin’s inaugural mobility hub due to the AARP grant opportunity and the City’s commitment in supporting the senior community with more mobility options. While the mobility hub is supported by the AARP grant, the hub will be available to users of any age or ability.
The total cost of the DCRC mobility hub project is approximately $100,000. Costs not covered by the grant will be funded through Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds budgeted for mobility hubs in 2022.
In addition to the shelter, this project will include the relocation of existing bike racks and modifications to an existing sidewalk by installing an ADA-compliant curb ramp for low-stress boarding and exiting the Dublin Connector shuttle.
The final design of the proposed DCRC mobility hub will be completed by February 2022 and construction is anticipated in late spring 2022.
Council voted at its meeting on October 11 to accept the grant funding and authorize the City Manager to enter into an agreement with AARP Ohio.
