The Dublin Police Department is pleased to welcome its newest Police K9, Finn to the force. After completing intense training, Finn is now working with his handler, Officer Justin Chappelear as a dual purpose narcotics K9.
Finn is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd mix trained to follow handler commands in Dutch. Officer Chappelear was selected as Finn’s handler in 2017. Chappelear is a seven-year veteran with Dublin Police who has wanted to be a dog handler from a young age.
In addition to general patrol duties, Off. Chappelear and Finn will have several roles with the Department including:
- Narcotics detection
- Building searches
- Area searches/suspect tracking
- Evidence searches
- Criminal apprehension
Off. Chappelear and Finn completed an extensive 12-week training course in Pennsylvania, and are already keeping Dublin safe. In just over two-months on patrol, the K9 team has helped seize drugs or drug paraphernalia from 50 vehicles, helping to reduce drug-related crimes in Dublin.
Dublin Police would like to thank The Dublin Community Foundation for their support of our K9 program. The foundation’s generous grant is helping to fund operational costs and vet care for the team.
