(Dublin) – At their meeting Monday, February 10, Dublin City Council recognized City of Dublin recreation staff members for their recent lifesaving efforts.
When a guest collapsed the evening of December 28, 2019, Dublin Community Recreation Center (DCRC) staff put their extensive training into action. Thanks to the immediate response of Brian O’Masta, Hillary Kessler, Jake Burns, Erin Shaughnessy, Jack Carlin, Stacey Tighe, Kate Futty, Jim Loch and Kelly Rigano—Tom Shelley is alive today.
Staff took swift action to initiate the EMS response, assess his condition, begin rescue breathing, apply AED (automated external defibrillator) equipment, apply a defibrillation shock, perform CPR, apply a second shock, and care for Mr. Shelley until Washington Township Fire Department arrived on the scene.
Thanks to the efforts of this team, in just a few hours after Mr. Shelley was transported to the hospital, staff received word that his state improved to a stable condition.
“We have a saying around here that working for the City of Dublin is ‘More Than a Job,’” said Matt Earman, Parks & Recreation Director for the City of Dublin. “That evening, several staff put their extensive training into action and we are proud of the way our team stepped up to the plate.”
“For first responders, these folks are the true heroes,” said Washington Township Fire Chief Alec O’Connell. “For these folks to have the courage to step up, and for the City to identify the need to make sure their people are trained—that’s why this was successful.”
A majority of the staff at the DCRC are certified in emergency response training such as CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED Administration and Oxygen Administration. All aquatics staff members and managers of the facility complete monthly skills checks to continuously fine tune their skills to successfully respond to a crisis situation.
Washington Township offers bimonthly CPR certification and quarterly first aid certification classes for members of the community. To learn more visit wtwp.com/classes-programs.
