2013 FedExCup Champion Henrik Stenson and fan favorite Rickie Fowler further strengthen one of the most stellar fields of the year on the PGA TOUR
Dublin, Ohio – Officials of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide announced today that three-time major championship winner and World No. 3 Jordan Spieth will compete in the 43rd edition of the Memorial May 28 – June 3 at Jack Nicklaus’ world-renowned Muirfield Village Golf Club.
The Tournament also has accepted entries from 2013 FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson and fan favorite Rickie Fowler. These latest commitments strengthen the Memorial’s world-class field that already includes commitments from Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Zach Johnson and 2017 Memorial winner Jason Dufner, all owners of major titles.
Spieth is coming off the third straight multi-win season of his career. During his 2014-2015 campaign he claimed five TOUR wins, including his first and second major championship titles at the Masters Tournament and U.S. Open, respectively. Spieth grabbed two wins the following year and added three more in 2017, including his third major at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. A Dallas native, Spieth, 24, is currently No. 3 in the world and No. 31 in FedExCup points on strength of four top-10 finishes, including two third-place outings in back-to-back weeks at the Houston Open and the Masters Tournament. He has been a member of two U.S. Presidents Cup teams (2013 and 2015) and two U.S. Ryder Cup teams (2014 and 2016) and has career earnings of $37,244,362. The 2013 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year all but swept the TOUR’s annual awards circuit in 2015, receiving the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA TOUR’s player of the year, the Byron Nelson Award for low adjusted scoring average (68.91) and the Arnold Palmer Award as the TOUR’s money leader. He also captured the 2015 FedExCup title. This will be Spieth’s fifth consecutive Memorial Tournament appearance. His best finish at Muirfield Village Golf Club came in 2015 when he shot a final-round 7-under-par 65 and tied for third. Spieth’s T-57 effort last year brought his Tournament scoring average to 71.13 and increased his Memorial earnings to $456,998.78.
Returning to the Memorial for the first time since 2013, Stenson, 42, has recorded four top-10 finishes this season in seven starts, including a runner up at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. He is currently No. 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking and sits at No. 43 in FedExCup points. The 2013 FedExCup champion is a six-time winner on the PGA TOUR and has 13 international victories. His most recent PGA TOUR win came last season at the Wyndham Championship, and he has career TOUR earnings of $29,189,619. Stenson claimed his major championship title at The Open Championship in 2016 at Royal Troon and has 12 top-10 finishes in majors since
turning professional in 1999. The native of Gothenburg, Sweden, has been a Ryder Cup regular for the European team over the past decade, playing in 2006, 2008, 2014 and 2016. Stenson’s best finish at the Memorial Tournament came in his last appearance in 2013 with a T-41 effort. He will be making his fifth start at Muirfield Village Golf Club next week where his scoring average is 72.86, and he has Tournament earnings of $30,597.
Fowler, 29, has been one of the most popular players on the PGA TOUR since turning professional in 2009. Since then, he has garnered $32,473,281 in career TOUR earnings, played on three Ryder Cup teams (2010, 2014 and 2016) and two Presidents Cup teams (2015, 2017) and posted four PGA TOUR victories, his first in 2012 at the Wells Fargo Championship and his latest coming at the 2017 Honda Classic. In 2014, Fowler finished inside the top-5 in all four major championships, tying for second at the U.S. Open and Open Championships. The 2010 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year has recorded top-12 finishes at The Masters Tournament four of the past five years, including a runner up this year. A resident of Jupiter, Florida, Fowler has posted three top-10 finishes in 11 starts this season, including two second-place efforts, and he is ranked No. 6 in the world and No. 22 in FedExCup points. This year will mark his ninth Memorial Tournament start. He has finished second on two occasions, his first appearance in 2010 and again last year. His career Tournament earnings total $1,511,064, and his scoring average is 71.27.
