Dublin Leads Ohio with Smarter Pedestrian Lighting

DUBLIN, Ohio — Keeping pedestrians safe has always been a priority in Dublin, and now there’s new technology shining a light — very literally — on that commitment!

The City of Dublin has deployed its first SecurOS® Soffit, an AI-driven, dynamic pedestrian lighting system from ISS (Intelligent Security Systems), at the Brand Road pedestrian crossing near Coventry Woods Drive. This marks the first Soffit installation of its kind in Ohio and underscores Dublin’s proactive, data-driven approach to enhancing safety for all roadway users.

Unlike traditional streetlights that stay on all night, the Soffit system lights up only when someone steps into the crosswalk. As pedestrians move, the lighting moves with them—making it easier for drivers to see and help people cross safely. The result is better visibility, less wasted light, and a smart, modern approach that prioritizes safety while using light only when it’s truly needed.

“The Soffit has already exceeded our expectations by providing the right amount of illumination to increase driver awareness of the presence of pedestrians in the crosswalk at night. Greater awareness is leading to more drivers yielding to pedestrians, and that’s the goal,” says Marc Dilsaver, Transportation Program Manager with the City of Dublin.

Why This Location?

The Brand Road pedestrian crossing was selected after the City received resident feedback regarding concerns about visibility and vehicle speeds in the area. In response, the City evaluated traffic conditions, pedestrian volumes and speed data. The results met the City’s criteria for additional crosswalk safety enhancements, making this location an ideal candidate for the new technology.

Innovation That Reflects Dublin’s Values

The goal of the Soffit system is simple: enhance pedestrian safety and improve driver awareness at a key crossing. As Dublin continues to evaluate emerging technologies, projects like this reflect the City’s commitment to thoughtful innovation, community input and safety-first decision-making.
