Paul Hammersmith Named APWA 2024 Public Works Servant Leader

DUBLIN, OH — City of Dublin Director of Engineering Paul Hammersmith was recently named the 2024 Clyde “Butch” Seidle Public Works Servant Leader Award winner. At the March 17, 2025, Dublin City Council meeting, the American Public Works Association (APWA) Ohio Chapter announced Hammersmith as the award honoree.

This award is presented annually to a public works practitioner who currently works or has spent their career in public works, has made outstanding contributions on a sustained basis and has managed, created or facilitated significant programs or projects within their area of responsibility to the ultimate benefit of the public. The award is named after former APWA-Ohio Chair and City of Hilliard Director of Public Service and Engineering Clyde Seidle.

Hammersmith has 38 years of professional experience, including 33 years in municipal government managing engineering and public works departments. He has been primarily responsible for implementing the City’s approximately $250 million Capital Improvement Program annually and effectively managing large-scale projects and budgets.

“Paul demonstrates exceptional leadership and expertise in all aspects of public works operations,” says City Manager Megan O’Callaghan. “We are incredibly proud of him and his unwavering dedication to service.”

Under his leadership, the City’s team of 37 employees, including 11 professional engineers, has thrived, showcasing Hammersmith’s talent for staff development and resource allocation. He has actively participated in various organizations, such as the American Public Works Association (APWA) Ohio Chapter Board of Directors over 22 years and the Logan-Union-Champaign County Regional Planning Commission Executive Committee. These roles demonstrate his dedication to sharing knowledge and contributing to the broader public works community.

“I’ve loved serving the City of Dublin and this grateful community for the past 25 years,” Hammersmith said after receiving his award. “I get to do this every day and have a lot of fun.” He regarded the namesake of the award, saying, “I knew Butch for many years… he was the epitome of public service. To get this award with his name on it really means a lot.”
