A new public artwork will be installed in the open green space between Whittingham Drive and Muirfield Drive near Muirfield Village Golf Club. “S/WING” captures the graceful power of movement, where the rhythm of a bird’s wings meets the timeless form of the golf swing. Inspired in part by Jack Nicklaus’s legendary technique and the countless swings that have shaped the course since 1974, the sculpture honors both the game’s tradition and its enduring future.
Created by Hispanic-American artist, sculptor and architectural designer Ivan Depeña, S/WING reflects themes of guidance, transition and connection. It draws on the deep symbolism of birds found in Shawnee, Wyandot and Irish-Celtic cultures. The piece invites viewers to contemplate the intersection of art, sport and community within Dublin’s natural and cultural landscape.
Depeña, an award-winning artist based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is nationally recognized for merging architectural precision with expressive form. His work frequently explores how movement, sound and technology shape human experience in public spaces.
This public artwork was made possible through a land donation from the Muirfield Association and support from the Ohio Legislature.
As the newest addition to the Dublin Art in Public Places program, S/WING offers residents and visitors a place for reflection and inspiration, bridging the city’s artistic spirit with its rich golfing heritage. The Dublin Art in Public Places Program enhances the city’s landscape through site-specific works by artists of national and international distinction. Since its inception, the program has enriched Dublin’s identity as a community where culture, creativity, and innovation thrive.
“At Dublin Arts Council, we think of public art as social infrastructure that creates space for connection, reflection and shared experience,” said Merijn van der Heijden, Executive Director of Dublin Arts Council. “S/WING brings together the landscape, movement and the natural environment reflecting both the rhythm of the game and patterns we see in nature, inviting people to slow down and connect in a shared space.”
The on-site installation of S/WING is scheduled for the week of April 13, with a public dedication ceremony May 20, 2026, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. at the site.
The event is free and open to the public. https://www.dublinarts.org/swing
