(Dublin, OH) Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is recognized yearly on Nov. 11. This is a day to honor our nation’s veterans and the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedoms. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and current mass gathering restrictions, the City of Dublin has canceled its annual in-person Veterans Day ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020.
“Dublin will still honor and recognize Veterans Day in close partnership with the Wesley G. Davids Dublin Post 800 of the American Legion,” Community Events Director Alison LeRoy said. “A virtual ceremony video will be posted to the City’s website and social media channels, including the City’s YouTube channel, on Nov. 11 to honor our country’s veterans.”
In addition to the virtual ceremony, Dublin residents and visitors can also commemorate those who served our nation with a walk through the Grounds of Remembrance at Dublin Veterans Park in downtown Dublin. For those who have not visited the park or are unable to visit in person, a new video tour, guided by Dublin resident and US Army Veteran Mike Kehoe, will be shared to social media and on the City of Dublin’s new microsite dedicated to honoring Dublin’s Veterans. Both the park video tour and website will launch on Veterans Day at DublinVeterans.com.
The Abbey Theater of Dublin will also stream a virtual performance of “We Served, A Play Created by Veterans about Veterans” from Nov. 11 to 15. The production is a series of 12 vignettes created during a year-long project based on personal experiences of veterans in Central Ohio. Four of the 12 vignettes will be presented in this special showing, which features both veteran writers and actors. The full-scale, world premiere of “We Served” is set for May 2021. Tickets are $5 per stream and audiences can purchase their ticket on the Abbey Theater’s website. A link to the virtual performance will be sent to registrants to be viewed for a limited time.
During this time of physical distancing, the City also encourages community members to pay special tribute to veterans:
- Call a veteran to thank them for their service.
- Visit a cemetery and decorate veterans’ gravesites with flags and flowers.
- Participate in the Veterans Day Moment of Silence and reflect on the service and sacrifice of all veterans, past and present. Pause for two minutes of silence at 2:11 p.m. EST.
- Sharing a photo on social media of a family member or friend who has served.
The City of Dublin would also like to recognize the 41 City employees who have served in the Armed Forces. Their sacrifices are greatly appreciated by the City of Dublin and its residents.
In observance of the national holiday, City of Dublin offices will be closed. The Dublin Community Recreation Center will remain open from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for those who have a reservation. Yard waste will be picked up Monday, Nov. 9, and recycling and trash will be collected Wednesday, Nov. 11.
