There are four species of squirrel found in Ohio: gray, red, flying and fox squirrels. Squirrels are never found far from the shelter provided by trees. They are opportunistic foragers feeding on acorns, nuts, fruits, berries, corn, fungi, flower bulbs, and bird seed. They readily adapt to suburban and urban areas.
Squirrels around Dublin
There are several different species of squirrels in Dublin. Tree squirrels include the large, day-active Eastern Grey Squirrel (also brown, white and black breeds) and the Fox Squirrel. Smaller squirrels around Dublin are the Red Squirrel and the strictly nocturnal Southern Flying Squirrel. Another species known as the ground squirrels include chipmunks, 13-lined ground squirrel and woodchucks.
Bird Feeders
Residents with bird feeders in their backyards tend to notice squirrels hanging around or getting into their feeder. No matter how hard they work to prevent the squirrel from getting to the bird feeder, squirrels almost always succeed. Squirrels are smart and athletic, they navigate tree limbs, trunks, wires and other obstacles. Please allow the squirrel to climb around the feeder and not to harm them.
Squirrels in homes
Squirrels occasionally try to utilize available attics, chimneys, sheds and barns to store food or make nests. This can create a hazard for residents and business owners, as their sharp teeth can damage structures and cut wires. Homes and buildings should be inspected early fall and mid-February each year to ensure any access points are repaid and sealed. Baby Squirrels
If you see a baby squirrel out of its nest please know squirrel moms are very good about fetching babies that are out of the nest, as long as the baby is warm. If a baby squirrel is found on the ground and is not injured, it can be placed in a small bin or shoebox that is lined with a very warm water bottle and dry cloth or towel lying over it. Place the young next to the covered bottle, then place the box under the tree or area where the nest is suspected to be. If the squirrel is not retrieved by dark, the mother may have left it behind accidentally. Injured or orphaned baby squirrels need to be taken to a wildlife rehabilitator.
