As a hub for technology and innovation, the City of Dublin is always on the lookout for creative ways to maximize our ability to serve the public. The use of drone technology by the Dublin Police Department is just one way our city is using modern capabilities to increase public safety efforts.
The Dublin Police Department has two drones that it uses for policing operations, the M210 and Mavic Enterprise drones. Dublin Police started using drones in 2020, and 10 officers are certified to fly them. Officers must pass a Federal Aviation Administration test to operate the drones for the police department.
Potential Drone Uses:
- Drones can be used for locating missing people or searching for a fleeting suspect.
- The immediate availability of the drones to search a vast area is one of their most valuable functions.
- They can fly over fires for Washington Township Fire Department and use thermal imaging to determine fire patterns and possible causes.
- Drones are used to map intersections, keeping updated data that is used in traffic crash investigations.
- The drones’ imaging capabilities can be used to photograph community events.
- Small drones can be used for indoor searches and crime scene mapping.
Drone Details:
- Each drone has a 25- to 30-minute flight time.
- They can fly to about a 5-mile radius.
- They can capture 3D imaging.
- The M210 has a 30x zoom camera to see long distances.
- Captured data is stored locally and securely in accordance with public records laws.
- Police can use a website to help monitor active drone footage during critical incidents.
As of December 2021:
- 1,046 flights taken; and
- 202 hours of flight time; and
- More than 9,000 photos captured; and
- More than 500 videos captured.
