Hinamatsuri: Girls’ Day Celebration

It’s Hinamatsuri! 🎎

Known as “Girls’ Day” or “Doll Festival” in English, Hinamatsuri is the Japanese holiday to pray for young girls’ healthy growth, prosperity and happiness.

Celebrated on March 3 every year, families with young girls often display a set of traditional Japanese dolls called hina-ningyo (hina dolls) at home to mark the occasion.

Compared with the photo above, traditional doll sets for Hinamatsuri can be even more elaborate, with multiple rows of dolls and figurines. Some people also choose to simplify the display.

Thanks to Chief’s Advisory Committee and Community Inclusion Advisory Committee member, Isao Shoji, for sharing his family’s tradition!
