(DUBLIN, Ohio) The Dublin Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspector have received several reports of mail theft from outdoor mail drop boxes. Recent thefts have been reported from these boxes outside the Shawan Falls Drive Post Office.
In several instances, thieves allegedly removed items of value from letters dropped off to be mailed. To protect yourself from these type of thefts, the Postal Inspector’s Office recommends placing outgoing mail in outdoor collection boxes prior to the last pick up of the day.
Other simple tips to avoid mail theft include:
- Hand outgoing mail to your letter carrier, or mail it from inside the Post Office or a secure receptacle at your place of business.
- If you don’t receive a check or other valuable mail you’re expecting, contact the issuing agency.
- Remove mail each day. If you won’t be home when items of value are expected, ask a trusted neighbor or family member to collect your mail
- If you are expecting a package delivery, track the shipment at usps.com.
If you witness a mail theft, call 9-1-1 immediately, then report the act to Postal Inspectors by calling 877-876-2455. If you believe your mail was stolen, you can report it online at https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov
As mail theft is considered a federal crime, the Dublin Police Department is referring comments on the current investigation to the U.S. Postal Inspectors Office directly.
