Part 3: Lightning Round
What’s the best way to keep wildlife off my property?
We can’t keep wildlife off our property entirely, but we can reduce their impact. Consider planting species that deter wildlife, using hazing techniques like motion-detection lights. Additionally never leave human or pet food outside.
What’s the difference between a fox and a coyote?
Foxes are a lot smaller at about 8 pounds while coyotes are around 20-25 pounds. Foxes are more likely to come close to our homes, while coyotes tend to stay away. Head here for more ways to tell the difference.
What should I do if I come into contact with a skunk?
Skunks are very nervous creatures, and they’re likely to spray if startled. If you see one, freeze and move back very slowly!
How can I tell if an animal is sick?
If the animal is on a mission foraging or moving from point A to point B, there’s nothing to worry about. But if an animal looks confused or is wandering aimlessly, it might be sick. Give us a call and we’ll look into it.

Part 2: Raptors
What’s a raptor?
A bird of prey with talons and hooked beak.
What are they up to in the winter?
During this time of year hawks are engaging in pre-courtship behavior, and looking for nesting sites.
Do they mate for life?
Yes.
Will they hurt my pets?
Raptors are a year-round risk to small pets, but in the winter they are more likely to view them as potential prey. Small pets are at a higher risk from hawks during the day and owls at night. Learn how you can protect your pets here.
How can I help an injured bird?
If you find an injured bird, use caution, wear gloves, and contain it with a big towel or sheet. Then call Ohio Wildlife Center at 614.793.WILD, or the Dublin Police non-emergency line at 614.889.1112 to dispatch SCRAM! Wildlife Control.
Part 1: Deer
What do they eat?
In the winter, acorns are their main source of food to get them through the season.
How fast can they run?
At top speeds they can run up to 35mph, but typically in a neighborhood it’s more like 15-20mph.
Are they dangerous?
Bucks, the male deer with antlers, can be dangerous. If you’re approached, stay out of their way, and be prepared to get behind a tree or other large obstacle. Wave your arms and make loud noises to try to shoo them away. For more tips watch this video.
How do I avoid them on the road?
Our best defense is to slow down and follow the speed limit. When you see crossing signs be especially vigilant.
When are the fawns born?
Most fawns are born in May. Be wary of deer guarding newborn fawns. If a doe approaches you, slowly back away, and avoid that area for about 14 days. Head here for more tips.
